ONEWAY Newsletter March 2007

ONEWAY Newsletter March 2007

Yard Update

ONEWAY has sent out seven winners from 26 runners to the end of March, a fantastic start to the year.

The two-year olds are generally progressing nicely with some more forward than others. The Raise A Grand filly is probably the most forward of the lot and I hope she will be my first juvenile runner on my birthday, 30 April, at Windsor.

Towards the end of February The Bentley Greens sent me Conservation, by Green Desert out of a Groom Dancer mare, Lightly Dancing. He is a gelding, foaled in 2003, who ran on the flat for Peter Chapple-Hyam and had one run over hurdles for Nick Gifford. He has run 12 times in his life, being placed seven times, but is still a maiden. He is, however, potentially well handicapped and should be running off 78.

On Saturday 10 March we entertained some 30 members of West Berkshire Racing Club at the yard giving them a stable tour and an update on all our horses and watching some exercise on the Near Down fibresand gallop. It is always nice to meet real racing enthusiasts and we all enjoyed the morning.

Winners

Since our last newsletter we had a winner on 24 February at Lingfield when Magic Glade did the business breaking the 5f track record in the process. This is what the Racing Post had to say:

This was notable for a rapid pace and - surprisingly, considering its class - a new track record. MAGIC GLADE is fully exposed as an eight-year-old and had produced his best in winning on the deeper fibresand at Southwell for former connections. He impressed in travelling smoothly, tracking the pace, and won decisively to suggest a ready follow-up despite the overall impression that the handicapper had not been kind to him.

The subsequent effort was over 6f and Magic Glade did not reproduce the same electric speed. We were very disappointed that he missed the cut for a listed race at Lingfield on Saturday 24 March back over his ideal trip. There is a good race waiting for him at some stage.

Gallop Morning

The gallop morning for the ONEWAY RSM Racing Club members on Saturday 3rd March was very well attended. Members had come, some from as far as Leeds, to see Bold Diktator who had won his first three races since we set up the Racing Club on 1 December. As those of you who were there and those who read our website will know, Boldie had other ideas and dumped his rider on the gallops and sped off in the opposite direction. Despite this set-back a very enjoyable morning was had by all.

Disposals

Unfortunately Otter Trail who came to me from South Africa, via Dubai, had a recurrence of his leg problems and we have had to give up any hope of him racing again. He has gone to a good home to do less exacting work.

The Perfect Plan has also had to be retired.

Horses for Sale

A lovely two year old

There are three shares (out of ten) remaining in the Raise A Grand filly. These are priced at £4,500 each plus VAT all inclusive until the end of the season. There is nothing else to pay. She is entered for the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury and The St Ledger Yearling Sales Race at York, both of which have huge prize money down to 10th place.

She is a half sister to Drayton, now trained by Mike De Kock, a listed winner at two and Group placed, a close fourth in an all age conditions stakes in Dubai and she has an entry in this year’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Is this not the bargain of the season?

ONEWAY RSM Racing Club

If the Raise A Grand is the bargain of the season the ONEWAY RSM Racing Club must be a close second.

Members of the club have two horses running for them and share in all prize money, just for a once only joining fee of £500 and then a monthly payment by standing order of just £40. Each member who joined by 1 December 2006 has not only had the thrill of Bold Diktator’s three wins but has earned £327 in prize money so far.

You can join the Club at any time by sending a cheque for £500 to the yard made payable to ONEWAY RSM Racing Club. Joiners share in prize money earned from 1st of the month following the date they join. So remember Boldie runs next on Sunday 1 April at Lingfield Park. If you want to be part of the party find your cheque book pronto.

Boldie is likely to go hurdling after 1 May, because he loves firm ground. The other Club horse, a Xaar filly, should be ready to run mid summer.

Dates for your Diary

Good Friday, 6 April, is Lambourn Open Day. Most of the Lambourn trainers’ yards are open to visitors in the morning, including ONEWAY, and in the afternoon there are events in the field the other side of Folly Road from our yard.

The Racing Club has yard visits and gallop mornings arranged for Saturday 26 May, Saturday 28 July and Saturday 22 September.

We are holding our own ‘Open Days’ on Saturdays 21 April, 16 June, 18 August and 20 October for any one who would like to visit us.

Please let Spencer know if you would like to visit us on any of these dates so we can arrange hospitality accordingly.

We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Michaela and I are having a few days in Dubai for the Dubai World Cup and will be back on Monday.

With best wishes.

Oneway RSM Racing Club

Mark Fletcher, known to all as Fletch, wrote the following in the Leeds office newsletter of RSM Robson Rhodes, who sponsor the Oneway RSM Racing Club:

"You may have seen an item on the Homepage notice board recently about Bold Diktator, one of the two horses owned by the Oneway RSM Racing Club.

Bill Dascombe, a recently retired RSM Robson Rhodes partner, established the club and his son, Tom, trains the horses at his yard in Lambourn. Tom has had a brilliantly successful start to his career, and Bold Diktator has been a major factor in that success, winning his first three races since being bought by the club last year. The picture shows some of the members of the club, including Graham Nunns and Mark Fletcher, up on the gallops watching the horses going through their paces.

Unfortunately, instead of watching Bold Diktator gallop majestically past, they saw him throw his rider and speed off in the opposite direction, followed by a worried trainer in a 4x4. He returned none the worse for his escape but certainly didn't need any more exercise that day, so the members never did see him working.

Proof of his success can be seen in the other picture, as he wins at Wolverhampton on 10 February. His latest run was less successful though as he finished well down the field, his chances ruined by a collision with a chasing horse, in which he lost a shoe and sustained a cut leg. Now fit again, he will soon be ready to start his hurdling career, which is what he was originally bought to do. The club's other horse, probably going to be called Miss Calculate (specially chosen as relevant to a club for accountants), is a two year old filly who will start her career in the summer. Anyone interested in finding out more about the club should have a chat with Mark or Graham. As the sadly unfit Mark said, "the cost is less than a gym membership but a great deal more enjoyable!".

So this is a reminder that anyone can join the Club for a once off joining fee of £500 plus a standing order payment of £40 per month thereafter, with nothing else to pay. If you join in March, for example, you share in any prize money from 1 April onwards. Those who joined before 1 December 2006 have already earned close to £400 each in prize money and sponsorship fees (as Bold Diktator won three of his first four races) and there are many many months to go and a two year old to run for the Club from mid-summer. Come on in, the water's lovely. A cheque for £500 payable to Oneway RSM Racing Club and sent to Tom is all you need to do to join.

Bold Diktator is entered to run at Lingfield on Saturday 23 March 2007. We hope he gets a run.

Entries w/c Monday 5th March 2007

Master of the Race has been entered in the 3.25 Novices Hurdle at Catterick on Wednesday, and also in the 2.00 Maiden Hurdle at Wincanton on Thursday. It is unlikely that he will run unless the ground improves.

Bold Diktator has been entered in the 3.30 at Wolverhampton on Saturday, he is working really well and if he gets the run it will be a big race.

Magic Glade has an entry in the 4.35 at wolverhampton on Saturday.
