Doncaster Yearling Sales

I'm off to Donny on Monday for four days to inspect the yearlings that will be in the sales ring from Tuesday to Thursday. This first sale of the season has produced some fine winners and I'll be looking for value. I still can't believe it's that time of year again but it is.

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who is interested in having a juvenile with me. Give me a call on 07973 511664.

Declarations for Tuesday

I have declared Rainbow Flame for the claimer at Lingfield on Tuesday over 1mile 4f. and he will wear blinkers. Gross Prophet is also declared to run in the 2yo auction stakes at 3.15 pm. Richard Kingscote, who won on Gross Prophet at Wolverhampton last time, rides both .

Racing Club News

Bold Diktator who runs in the colours of our racing club, the ONEWAY RSM Racing Club, has been declared for the 3.15 pm race at Huntingdon on August Bank Holiday Monday. Jamie Moore rides as AP McCoy was claimed by Jonjo. I rate Jamie highly so am pleased with the jockey booking. On his debut over jumps at Stratford two weeks ago Boldie ran second.

Why not join our racing club? You can join for a one-off fee of £500 followed by a monthly subscription of £40 payable by standing order. Members share fully in all prize money. There is absolutely nothing else to pay. The detailed Club rules can be found on the ONEWAY RSM Racing Club page of our website. Boldie has already won four times for us on the flat and members who joined the Club by 1 December last year have already earned £500 each as their share of prize money. Join by 1 September and you will qualify to share in prize money won after 1 September. Just send a cheque for £500 to me payable to ONEWAY RSM Racing Club and I'll send you a SO form for your completion. Remember we have another Club horse a 2yo True And Fair, a strong Xaar filly, who should make her debut shortly.

Entries w/c Monday 27 August 2007

Bold Diktator is entered at Huntingdon on Bank Holiday Monday and as the ground looks like it will be good to firm there is a good chance he will be declared to run. Hopefully, AP McCoy will ride.

On Tuesday 28 Rainbow Flame is entered in a claimer at Lingfield but it is unlikely he will be declared. Gross Prophet is entered on the same card at 3.30 pm and is a possible runner.

On Thursday 30 August Adam Eterno is entered at Lingfield in both a maiden and a nursery but may not get a run in either. Both Gross Prophet and Max One Two Three are entered at Lingfield that day.

On Friday 31 August Max One Two Three is entered at Salisbury's evening meeting as is What's For Tea. Adam Eterno is entered in the 7.00 pm at Wolverhampton the same day.

Entries w/c 20 August 2007

Thursday
York - Clifton Dancer is entered in the St Leger Yearling Sales Race but she won't get a run. She has an automatic entry for the consolation race at Newmarket on Friday and, hopefully, she will get a run in that race but she needs eight horses to come out.

Friday
Bath - Drumhallagh is entered in the 2yo maiden at 5.25 p.m. and Rainbow Flame in the 1 mile 5f handicap at 6.55 p.m.

Newbury - Clifton Dancer is entered in the 7f maiden but there are 59 entries and only 16 run so her chances of a run are slim with 23 horses needing to come out.

Etoile Argentee is entered in the fillies handicap over 1mile 5f at 3.25 p.m. Only two horses need to come out for her to get a run.

Newcastle - Gross Prophet, who won last time, is entered in a novice for 2yo's at 6.05 p.m. but needs seven to come out to get a run.

Thirsk - Max One Two Three is entered in the 7f selling stakes at 2.30 p.m.

Saturday
Ishi Adiva has been entered for both Beverley and Goodwood and Gross Prophet and Etolie Argentee have entries at Windsor.

Sunday update

Michaela came 4th at Newbury yesterday on Mystic Storm for Lady Herries rewarding her each way backers at 14/1

Today Treacle Noir runs in the first at Bath. She has improved with each run and we are hoping for a little more again today but once again she has a poor draw.

Tomorrow, Monday, Bold Diktator returns to the all-weather at Wolverhampton (4.15 pm) where he has already won twice over the course and distance. Richard Kingscote rides. Rainbow Flame runs in the last at Yarmouth's evening meeting with Hayley Turner up.

Clifton Dancer at Chepstow

Posted by Picasa

Lady Amateur Rider's Derby

Unfortunately Rainbow Flame was balloted out of the Lady Amateur Rider's Derby at Newbury tomorrow, Saturday. This was a big disappointment for us all, especially Michaela, as we thought Rainbow Flame would have a great chance and the winning prize money is a cool £12,500. Luckily Michaela has picked up a ride in the race for Lady Herries on Mystic Storm who was only just beaten in a gentlemen amateur rider's race 12 days ago. Let's hope Michaela can go one better.

Treacle Noir

Treacle Noir has been declared for the 2.30 pm 2yo maiden race at Bath on Sunday 19 August. Richard Kingscote rides.

Clifton Dancer

Clifton Dancer ran well at Chepstow last evening over 6 furlongs coming third in only her second race beaten about 1 1/2 lengths by the winner. She looked magnificent winning the best turned out prize and £50 for Ashleigh.

Bold Diktator runs second on his hurdles debut

Bold Diktator ran well at Stratford yesterday coming second on his hurdles debut. On the whole Boldie jumped well although he did make a couple of novicey mistakes. McCoy thought he needed the run and felt he would improve for it. This was of course his first race after two months off. The ground at Stratford, described as good to firm, good in places, was in fact very patchy and was clearly on the soft side in some places.

I will enter him for a maiden hurdle at Huntingdon on Bank Holiday Monday 27th August. However, he will only run if the ground is genuinely good to firm or firmer.

There is a flat race for him at Wolverhampton on Monday, 20th August, where he has already won twice over the course and distance

Winner No 14 for the Year!

Gross Prophet won the 2yo maiden at Wolverhampton on Monday. This was my first 2yo winner of the year (rather late, August!) and, coincidently, my first last year was also at Wolverhampton (in April!).

This is what the Racing Post wrote:

Tom Dascombe has developed quite a liking for Wolverhampton since he started training and he made it six wins from just 17 runners at the track when sending out Gross Prophet to take the 6f juvenile maiden under Richard Kingscote.

Gross Prophet had slightly disappointed Dascombe when third on fast ground at Windsor last time, but found the surface here more to his liking and scored with a bit in hand from Tugalu.

"It was a bit quick for him at Windsor, which is why I've brought him back here, to what is proving to be a lucky course for me" he said.

Dascombe will now be considering the nursery option for Gross Prophet, though he feels the gelding's current mark of 74 could be a bit harsh.

"He's going to want a bit of cut", he said, "and he'll get a mile in time, but we've got to build up to that gradually".

Entries w/c 13th August 2007

w/c 13th August 2007

Bold Diktator runs today at Stratford with AP on board. They split the race and Boldie is in the 5.15pm. This will be his first time over hurdles and it is a question of whether he stays 2m. I am confident that he will.

Also today, Gross Prophet runs in the 2.30pm race at Wolverhampton.

Entries this week are:

Thursday - Gross Prophet & Clifton Dancer - Chepstow. Median Auction Maiden Stakes

Thursday - Gross Prophet - Folkestone. Maiden Auction Stakes

Saturday - Rainbow Flame - Newbury

Sunday - Treacle Noir - Bath

Runners on Monday 13 August

Bold Diktator is to be declared tomorrow morning to run at Stratford on Monday in a novice hurdle. This will be his debut jumping but he has schooled well. Unfortunately it looks as though Jonjo will have a runner in the race after all so AP won't be available to ride but I think I have secured a very able deputy in 'Chocolate' Thornton.

Gross Prophet also runs Monday afternoon at Wolverhampton in his first outing on the all-weather. Richard Kingscote rides.

Day 6 Saturday 11 August 2007

I found myself thinking about the horses before I fell asleep last night. I quite upset myself thinking about leaving; must be a girl thing. I'm really going to miss the horses and the people who have been really welcoming and helpful. Working with horses is hard work but it is very rewarding. A few of the horses have 'attitude' and you learn to be respectful around them. My only regret is that I was unable to ride out. A lack of a body protector didn't help. The only horse Tom felt comfortable for me to ride was Bold Diktator but as he was due an imminent run (like on Monday) he couldn't afford to take the risk. Perhaps another time.

Tom has been wonderful accommodating my probing questions and showing me the ropes. I have learned so much in just six days about racing and training and I'm already planning my return. If I let my husband go off on his own holiday maybe I'll be back.

A huge 'thank you' to everyone who helped me: Michaela, Ashleigh, Nuno, Viktor, Gary, and Emmanuel. Thanks also to Steve Pilling for putting me up and to Helene for allowing me to use her room whilst she was on holiday back home in Sweden.

Day 5 Friday 10 August 2007

I was woken up with a start last night at 10.45 p.m. by my youngest daughter to tell me she had read the blog. 'Wonderful darling, but could you ring me in the morning'. I had already been in bed an hour, my heart was pounding and it took ages to drop off again.

I went with Ashleigh and Tom to Newmarket races with What's For Tea. Walking back to the horse box I saw Frankie Dettori, which was a thrill for me. I'm not sure how he felt but he has a very engaging smile.

What's For Tea came third and it was a great day for me seeing things from the stable lad's side. They put in a great deal of work with the horses both before and after the race, walking quite a distance. They only finish when the horse is home safely no matter what the time. It can be a very long day.

Day 4 Thursday 9 August 2007

I spoke to the family last night telling my eldest daughter how much I was enjoying myself and that I wanted to stay. She replied 'I thought you might say that!' The younger was more interested in knowing if I had ridden anything and which horses I was looking after. I told my husband that there are a few houses for sale down here but that I hadn't checked the prices. 'Hmmm...' was the reply.

It was a little cooler this morning and I found myself thinking 'would I still be enjoying this as much if it was wet, windy and cold?' and the answer was 'yes'. Having worked with horses before and climbing telegraph poles as an engineer, I am no stranger to being soaked through and freezing cold.

Walking the horse to the pool, catching in, turning out and normal stable duties are great for toning up my flabby bits and, although it can be physically tiring, I feel much fitter and it should be recommended as the new health spa. I feel a massage wouldn't go amiss but the manicures would be wasted.

Day 3 Wednesday 8 August 2007

I slept well last night!

It was like Piccadilly Circus on the gallops this morning, with strings of horses from all directions. Tom called it rush hour in Upper Lambourn. I’m sure he must be getting tired of all my questions by now but I’m learning so much.

The vet, Caroline, came for her routine Wednesday visit straight after first lot and whilst scoping Ishi Adiva let me look down her wind-pipe, larynx and nose. This was absolutely fascinating to me. I trotted up some horses for the vet to examine. Etoile Argentee was full of beans. A 2yo had shock treatment for her ligament problems. Whilst I have heard of it I have never seen it administered before. I watched another older horse have x-rays but didn’t have time to see Tom take blood.

I took Etoile Argentee swimming again and she walked straight in.

Day 2 Tuesday 7 August 2007

I was temperature queen again today before going up to the gallops. I then got Bold Diktator ready for AP to take over the jumps. I met the man himself and watched him school Boldie over hurdles and to everyone's delight AP gave him the thumbs-up. I then took Etoile Argentee for a spin in the pool again and this time she was a little less resistant.

In the afternoon I had to wash the clay off Boldie’s legs which took me a while as long nails aren’t ideal on a yard.

Michaela talked me through the medications and her career with horses.

Day 1 Monday 6 August 2007

I arrived at the yard good and early for my first day, so early that I was the first there. Soon the yard was a hive of activity and, after a while, Tom realised I was there. (I don’t think he thought I’d be there before 6.00 a.m.)

He started me off gently taking temperatures, so I’m not just learning the horse’s heads. Then up to the gallops, each jockey and horse with its instructions. Back to the yard to put horses on the walker or turned out, then second lot.

Just after 10.00 we took Etoile Argentee for her first swim. She obviously had strong reservations about the pool, but after some ‘gentle’ persuasion from Tom she puffed and snorted her way round a couple of times, came out, turned around and went straight back in.

We then cleaned head collars and chifneys before watering the horses and sweeping the yard and it was noon and time for lunch.

I walked back to my lodgings with Steve Pilling, who has been absolutely great, and caught up with the two girls I am sharing with.

In the afternoon we skipped out and dug out banks putting in fresh shavings, brought horses in, turned others out and put some on the walker, cleaned buckets and mangers. The horses get five feeds a day, but the surprise to me was no hay.

Michaela went through the yard tending to the injured and answering my many questions as she went.

Entries w/c 6 August 2007

I have entered Bold Diktator for a novice hurdle over 2 miles 1f. at Sedgefield on Friday 10 August at 4.00 p.m. Tony McCoy, who won on him at Sandown in a jumps v. flat jockeys race, is coming to school him tomorrow, Tuesday. I'm hoping that Tony will be available to ride him on Friday.

On the same day What's For Tea is entered in a selling race at Newmarket at 6.15 p.m.

On Saturday 11 August Ishi Adiva and Magic Glade are both entered in a 5f class 2 handicap at Haydock due off at 2.00 p.m. and covered by the BBC. Rainbow Flame is entered on the same card at 4.45 p.m. in a class 5 handicap over 1 mile 6f.

ONEWAY RSM Racing Club Newsletter

July 2007

Dear Members,

Bold Diktator

I’m considering a race for him at Stratford on Monday 13 August. It is a novice hurdle for 4yo’s and upwards over 2 miles timed to go off at 2.15 pm. I’ll let you know on 7 August whether or not I have entered him.

True and Fair

I am going to enter her for a race at Chepstow on Thursday 16 August at 5.50pm. The race is over 6 furlongs and it should be a suitable race to start her in.

Yard Update

Ishi Adiva won a nice handicap for us at Newmarket on 21 July under a really impressive ride by Richard Kingscote. He claims 3lbs but has only another eight winners to go before he loses his claim altogether.

Shawhill came third in the listed race at York last Saturday. We were delighted as she has now been placed in two listed races and has earned ‘black type’ for her pedigree as a brood mare in due course.

We sent Master of the Race to the Sales and got £11,500 for him which we were very pleased about. He has gone to race in Greece. We also sold Conservation and the owners got a good price for him as well.

Baldovina has left us to join David Pipe to try her luck over hurdles. We lost Jazamataz to a severe bout of colic only a few days after her run at Folkestone. Scar Tissue was claimed when we ran her in a seller which was not the outcome we were expecting.

New Arrivals

Adam Eterno has joined us from Brian Meehan’s. He was bought privately after being unplaced in a seller.

I claimed a 3yo Rainbow Flame. He is stoutly bred and I hope he will improve for a step up in trip. He will run in the ONEWAY colours.

I also claimed What’s For Tea, who has run unplaced three times at Catterick over 7 furlongs for Tim Easterby. She has been bought by Alan Solomon.

Gallop Morning

I’m sorry we had to cancel the gallop morning last Saturday. The next one is booked for 22 September.

Staff

We look forward to welcoming Becky Ward as our new Secretary on Monday 6 August. She will work in the office each morning from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm. Becky worked for Mark Pitman for seven years and before that for Richard Phillips for a number of years so is very well experienced.

Michaela followed up her excellent winning ride on Sawwaah for us by riding an equally impressive race to win on Regal Sunset for Don Cantillon at Yarmouth yesterday. That’s 2 out of 2 this season. The instructions from the trainer were simply to call the horse Cyril, the rest was left to her.
