A big surprise!

On Sunday ONEWAY held an Owners' Day.

It was not only a thank you to all the owners who have supported us since the beginning but also a chance for us to show our owners our new stables.

Having had a vintage year highlighted by Group 2 two-year-old winners Classic Blade and Firth of Fifth, we saw the need for expansion and have recently taken over Paul Blockley’s yard adjacent to the original yard.

Tom now has space for 72 horses on site.

It was also an opportunity for
ONEWAY to show off the yearlings that Tom had purchased at the various sales over the past few months and hopefully to sell a few of the mighty beasts. The yard was successful in selling a few but there are a couple more to go and the details are on our website, just click The Horses for Sale tab.

But the wonderful surprise of the day was the announcement by Tom of his engagement to his secretary Sam Paton (see photo)

Winner No 30 for the year

Tom's last runner, before the end of the 2008 flat season, was a winner. Saucy, ridden by Richard Kingscote, won at Lingfield on Thursday afternoon to make it 30 winners in 2008. This was Saucy's second run for Tom and was a welcome winner for both Tom and Saucy's owner Bernadette Quinn.

Tom was not able to go to Lingfield today because he was supervising the arrival at his yard of some 34 yearlings all already broken and ridden away by Harry Whittington at his yard on the outskirts of Lambourn. This is the third year that Harry has helped in this way and Tom is very satisfied with the care and attention the young stock have received. Harry has become an essential part of the ONEWAY team. The yearlings will now have just a few days to settle in before being paraded for Tom's owners at an end of season party at the yard on Sunday 9th.

Having moved into the yard at Felstead Court recently, increasing ONEWAY's capacity to 73 boxes, it is very pleasing to see all the boxes full with horses in training with those temporarily out of training being housed elsewhere.

Anyone with a serious interest in purchasing one of the unsold yearlings (click the Horses For Sale tab on the website for further details) should call Tom on 07973 511664 with a view to visiting the yard and inspecting them. You will be made very welcome.

At The Races

Tom was a guest of At The Races on the Forum programme at 9.00 am on Sunday, hosted by Matt Chapman.

The first half of the programme was a discussion about jump racing and in particular the seasonal reappearances of Kauto Star and Noland at Down Royal on Saturday. It was interesting that Tom, a trainer who specialises in flat racing, should be asked to give his opinion on the performances of Paul Nicholls' jumpers.

The next 15 minutes was devoted to exploring with Tom his view of his 2009 season and the ups, like the two Group 2 wins an July, and the downs, like 66 days without a winner. It was great publicity and, hopefully, viewers would have felt that Tom acquited himself well. At least he, like Matt Chapman, is always prepared to express an opinion.

The last quarter of the programme was spent reviewing the runners in the Melbourne Cup.
