Classic Blade runs them ragged

Classic Blade won the Class 2 Conditions Race for 2yo's at Salisbury today under another exceptionally able front running ride from Richard Kingscote. The Racing Post writes:

"An authoritative display in a warm-looking heat by Classic Blade for whom fears that the ground would prove too quick proved unfounded. Tom Dascombe said ' I was a bit worried about the ground because his action lends itself to the soft.'

The Daggers Drawn colt hasn't looked back since a slightly disappointing debut run and followed up his smart Doncaster win with another convincing effort. Making virtually all he kept pulling out extra when pressed by Measurement and had the rest well strung out. Measurement ...ran into a tartar in the impressive winner".

This was Tom's 19th winner of the year and his 3rd 2yo winner from only 17 2yo runners.

Clifton Dancer surprised us all be leading from pillar to post in a listed race for 3yo fillies over 7 furlongs at Warwick on Thursday 26 July. She was badly drawn but broke really well under a masterful ride from Richard Kingscote and managed to grab the rail very early on. She came under pressure when threatened at the top of the straight but found plenty under a drive in the closing stages to hold out for her first black-type success.

Cyril Pritchard her enthusiastic part-owner was absolutely delighted and with his fellow owner Geoff Neville threw a party for the stable staff at The Malt Shovel in Lambourn on Friday night.

Yesterday Rowan River ran in the Fillies' Handicap Stakes at Windsor, she came fourth beaten only a length by the winner.

Campbeltown Trader also ran at Windsor and was pipped at the post in the 6 furlong Maiden Auction Stakes.

The Racing Post wrote "Campbeltown Trader enjoyed this better ground to step up on his debut effort, but he is another who should get further and so come into his own later this season.

Today Haafhd Time runs at Newbury in the 6.50 Maiden Auction Fillies' Stakes.

Wednesday Prince Desire runs at Salisbury in the 5.20 Handicap Stakes.

Thursday Clifton Dancer runs at Warwick in the 3.50 Listed Race.

Friday Caprio is entered at Chester in the 8.20 Claiming Stakes and again at Chester on Saturday in the 5.05 Handicap Stakes.

On Sunday Classic Blade in entered in the 4.05 Auction Stakes at Salisbury.

Zaskar and Naughty Thoughts

Zaskar ran a great race at Le Lion D'Angers on Friday last to come second in the listed Prix Urban Sea. She refused to settle and her rider, Davy Bonilla, had a terrible time trying to manage her but despite everything she absolutely flew once he pressed the button in the straight and she went from a virtual last to second inside the final furlong. This gives her the coveted black type which she went to France to earn and her owners were delighted.

Later that day at York Naughty Thoughts won her third race for us since being purchased out of a seller and added a further £6,500 to her prize money. She is very well related including to some classy jumpers so she should go on to better things both on the flat and over jumps.

Prix Urban Sea, Friday 13 June

Zaskar runs in the listed race, the Prix Urban Sea, for 3yo fillies at Le Lion D'Angers tomorrow, Friday. The race is due off at 4.05 pm local time and is over 1m 3f 110 yrds. This is the same race that Shawhill came second in last year. There are just nine runners and she must have a decent chance. She is now rated 82 having gone up 11 lbs for her win last time out. The highest rated horse running against her tomorrow is Without Precedent, at 88.

Michaela left with Zaskar last night and they arrived at Florent Monnier's yard about 10.00am this morning. The weather there is similar to here with some light rain. Zaskar will appreciate some give in the ground.

The owners Peter Deal and Michael Silver and their wives/ partners together with Tom and his good friend Stewart Little fly over tomorrow morning.

Classic Blade, first 2yo winner this year

Classic Blade made all to win the 6f maiden auction stakes at Doncaster this evening seeing off the Sir Mark Prescott even money favourite who could only finish fourth. This was Classic Blade's second run having finished fourth on his debut six weeks ago. He had improved significantly over the intervening weeks and I was reasonably confident that he would run well and be my first 2yo winner of the season.

I am so pleased for all the members of the Classic Strollers Partnership and for Evan Sutherland and Caroline Ingram who have been a great supporters of the yard. This was Caroline's first winner as an owner.

That is now 15 winners this year with some really nice horses still to make their debuts.

I would also like to say 'thank you' to everyone who kindly sponsored me for the bungee jump (which fortunately never took place) at the Lambourn Open Day. The total amount came to £320 and was very gratefully received by the organisers on behalf of the charities that they were supporting.

I have updated the Horses For Sale page on the website for a very nice colt by Refuse To Bend that I have available for sale. He did a very good breeze at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up and I purchased him for only 32,000 guineas.

Winner at Newbury on Saturday

Clifton Dancer, owned by Cyril Pritchard, Geoff Neville and Stuart McPhee, won her handicap at Newbury on Saturday (making it 13 winners for ONEWAY so far this year) under a fine ride from young Ross Atkinson who joins me on Monday as my apprentice. He claims 7lbs and is only 17 years old but has now ridden for me four times scoring three times and coming second once.

Clifton Dancer was hardly headed in the race and won by a comfortable length. This was her second win in eight races and I'd like to find a listed race for her to get some black type. She has grown and strengthened up hugely over the winter as she matured into a 3yo. I was delighted that Cyril Pritchard was so ecstatic after her win. It is this which makes my often stressful job so rewarding.

Naughty Thoughts makes it 50 winners since I started training

Naughty Thoughts won a four runner race at Salisbury today at odds of 4/7 , picking up over £7,000 in prize money. It was a huge relief for me as the winners have proved hard to get over the last month. Whilst I have hardly had a runner out of the first three I have had to accept second place far too often! That makes it 12 winners for the year to date and 50 since I started training in November 2005.

Naughty Thoughts was purchased out of a seller having been spotted by Martin Stillwell who manages 123 Racing Partnership. She cost about £8,000 and has now won two races for us amply repaying that investment.

Shiva Adiva came second in only her second race at 20/1 to the favourite Sun Ship. It was a hugely encouraging run and her owners Stephen & Michelle Bayless, who bred her, were absolutely thrilled.

1000 Guineas

I'd like to thank everyone who sent me messages of support and 'good luck' for Max One Two Three's run in the 1000 Guineas yesterday. It was a huge thrill to have a classic runner in only my third season and although it was naturally disappointing not to have been in the prize money it was a fantastic experience from which lessons have been learned. We could not have had better publicity and I am very grateful for the coverage that I and the ONEWAY team received. None of this would have been possible without the support of some fantastic owners and, in the case of Max, from Bert Black and his family and friends. Thank you.

Gross Prophet runs this afternoon at 3.45 pm at Warwick.

On Thursday I have entered Savile's Delight at Goodwood at 3.00 pm and both Clifton Dancer and Zaskar at 4.10 pm.

Saturday could be a busy day. At Lingfield I have entered Max One Two Three in a Group 3 for fillies and mares over 7 furlongs (3.40 pm) and both Desert Dreamer and Savile's Delight in a ladies amateur rider's race at 5.15 pm. I have also entered Old Father Zieten at Haydock in a 6 furlong maiden at 3.45 pm and Prince Desire in a 6 furlong handicap at 4.20 pm. Wing Home is entered in a maiden at Warwick at 6.25 pm.

Lambourn trainer Tom Dascombe should know a few things about talented fillies.

As a one-time assistant to successful South African trainer Mike de Kock, Dascombe was involved in the training of two Group One winning filies in Ipi Tombe, who captured the 2003 Dubai Duty Free, and Crimson Palace, who landed the following year's Beverly D Stakes at Arlington.

Tom Dascombe has come a long way since falling off Pond House in the 1998 Grand National (Comment by Ben: Not correct! Pond House pulled up after a circuit he didn't fall)

That involvement would suggest that Dascombe's decision to throw Max One Two Three into Sunday's Stan James 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket isn't just a fanciful dream by a hopeless optimist.

As short as 25-1 in some books but still avalailable at 40-1, Max One Two Three falls into the outsider category.

By their very nature, the major contests on the Flat provide fairytale results far less frequently than their counterparts over jumps. Results at the Group One sharp end impact hugely on the bloodstock business that is the raison d'etre for top-level competition and for every Pam Sly there are twenty Aidan O'Briens. Which, really, is as it should be; if money did not reap overall rewards then there would be no investment and the house of cards would collapse.

But the door always remains ajar to the smaller operator. And in the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday, third-season trainer Tom Dascombe will take on the might of the likes of Ballydoyle, Godolphin and Cheveley Park Stud with cheaply-bought, unfashionably-bred Max One Two Three.

This morning Tom was a guest of Matt Chapman on ATR's Racing Forum. He had a horrible journey to the studio at Old Street because the Sunday train service from Hungerford to Paddington was non existent and he was worried about the affect of the London Marathon on the traffic in central London. So having lost time waiting on the platform in Hungerford he ended up driving to Hammersmith and getting the tube through to the City. Having planned to arrive with over an hour in hand, enough time to compose himself, he only arrived with minutes to spare.

Whilst Matt was generally very kind to him he did ask a number of searching questions about Tom's attitude to various issues like the level of prize money, the 'cleanliness' of the sport, the fairness of Tony Dobbin's last winner on Thursday and asked Tom to identify a sure-fire winner in 2008. He named Flying River, the 2yo he bought for his staff to share, as the most certain one to find its way to the winner's enclosure.

It was great to see clips of Tom's race riding days including winning rides on Caracol and Oliver Cromwell. Tom paid tribute to Martin Pipe for the skills, experience and training he gained whilst at Pond House and said that he had no intention of taking up training himself until he worked with Mike De Kock in Dubai and was hugely motivated to take up training by the quality of horses Mike had under his care.

Grant Thornton Racing Club members on Mandown gallops Saturday 12 April 2008

About 30 members and their family and friends came to the yard on Saturday and to the Mandown gallops to see the Club horses True And Fair and Onemoreandstay have a canter. Some members came from as far as Leeds but others lived more locally including in Lambourn. Tom gave a conducted tour of the yard describing each of the horses, especially the 22 2yo's which most of the Club members had not seen before, and decribed his ambitions and hopes for the season ahead.

We have a gallop morning organised for Saturday 12 April 2008 starting at 9.30 am when club members will meet at the yard and then proceed to Mandown to see True And Fair do a piece of work. We are hoping that this 3yo filly will make her debut on the racecourse on Friday 18 April at Newbury.
